The International Academy of Ceramics is proud to introduce the first edition of the “Treasure Bowl Collection”. This first edition crystallizes a landmark moment in the history of our association. The “Treasure Bowl Collection” is the result of a rare collaboration between the Council, ten international artists and the curator Misun Rheem (South Korea), all of whom are IAC members. This entirely unique collection celebrates the IAC philosophy which is based on knowledge-sharing and kinship.
The theme of the collection, “Native Clay”, was a natural choice. Through the elementary act of shaping a bowl, the invited artists used their remarkable traditional and contemporary skills to express the concepts of native, personal, and common values. For the ceramic artist, the bowl is an archetypal and emblematic form, uniting within it the concepts of sharing, origins and anchorage. In all its variations, it is an iconic object symbolic of a universal human consciousness and human needs. Its expressive potential as the voice of many cultures testifies to its great artistic value.
The IAC fully embraces its international mission in this project. Through the simple device that is a bowl, the IAC enables ten cultures to successfully coexist, all whilst emphasizing the artists’ individual personalities, their modelling of the clay, and the various techniques that they use or reinvent with their own characteristics.
The 10 artists who took part in this project are:
- Abbas Akbari (Iran)
- Philippe Barde (Suisse)
- Janet DeBoos (Australie)
- Wayne Higby (États-Unis)
- Kyung Jo Roe (Corée du Sud)
- Toshio Ohi Chozaemon XI (Japon)
- Gustavo Pérez (Mexique)
- Ann Van Hoey (Belgique)
- Wen Yeh (Taipei chinois)
- Fiona Lai Ching Wong (Hong Kong)
This first edition consists of 12 numbered sets, each composed of 10 bowls signed by the respective artists. The limitation to 12 sets and 10 artists makes this first edition a unique achievement in the world of contemporary ceramics. The aim of the “Treasure Bowl Collection” is to promote IAC members by highlighting their unique skills. The generated revenue contributes to supporting the IAC’s activities. The two benefactors who enabled the production of the entire first edition joined this project on the basis of their trust in the IAC. That trust is a credit to the talent of the artists and the curator.
A second edition of the “Treasure Bowl Collection” is currently underway and will be presented at the IAC Congress in Rovaniemi, Finland, in July 2020.
