Historique

Our digital collections are a growing presence in the documents and reading matter we are able to make available to readers and researchers. Most of the digital materials involve reviews, databases, and specialized research ebooks.

The Bibliothèque de Genève offers some 90,000 scholarly journals and reviews, 700 databases, and 600,000 specialized research ebooks online. This broad range of materials has been jointly acquired as part of the Genevan academic website and benefits from all of the patrons it represents. The Genevan academic website is made up of the University of Geneva and the research libraries of the City of Geneva (including the Bibliothèque de Genève), along with several other partners.

The content corresponds to the Bibliothèque’s centers of excellence and the disciplines that are taught at the University of Geneva, except for general literature.

The Bibliothèque de Genève is also a producer of digital content

Through the ongoing digitization of its historical collections, and the collecting and archiving of websites having a Genevan connection, the Bibliothèque has indeed become a producer of digital content. The library has also set up a digital publication platform that is meant to conserve the contents of Genevan publishers.

History

Starting in the 1990s, the main publishers of scientific and scholarly literature turned a corner in terms of the digital age. As early as 2000, the Consortium of Swiss academic libraries was founded as a purchasing group in order to negotiate the best price for the costly subscription fees to online resources, and to offer as complete coverage as possible for published materials.

The Consortium is authorized to sign a contract for a particular resource if a certain number of partners (academic libraries or research institutions) are interested.

If interest is lacking on the national level, the Bibliothèque may propose subscribing to a particular resource as part of the Genevan academic website.
