Historique

The general collection offers a study and research collection that is closely associated with the centuries-old history of the Bibliothèque and its heritage collections. The study and research collection is based on three centers of excellence, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and “Genevensia” (that is, all documents touching on Geneva and its inhabitants), and on a number of strong points.

The Bibliothèque possesses an exceptional collection that is focused on documentation of all things Genevan, the history of Geneva, and the history Switzerland in general. As for European history, the Bibliothèque’s collections are especially strong in the modern period, including at both chronological ends two centers of excellence, the Reformation and the Enlightenment.

In the field of French literature, the Bibliothèque has developed an important collection of texts and studies concerning the 16th century (in connection with the history of the Reformation) and the 18th century, for which the Bibliothèque, along with the Musée Voltaire, stands as a major institutional point of reference.

On religion, the Bibliothèque offers important sources and resources for the history of Christianity and in particular the history of the Reformation, the religious wars of the 16th century, and Protestantism.

The collections for classical studies and in particular ancient Greece and Rome are a significant part of the Bibliothèque, which also offers an important collection of Egyptology.

The Bibliothèque’s philosophy collection is mainly focused on Western philosophy. The texts and studies of Greek and Roman philosophy and the philosophy of the 16th and 18th centuries are the strong points of this collection.

Still other domains like the history of science and travel narratives are likewise a strong presence in the collections.

And finally, the Bibliothèque de Genève’s different branch sites are true reference centers in and of themselves.
