Historique

Circulation

Books may be borrowed for free at the Circulation desk (the Prêt à domicile office) on the first floor of the Bastions main branch and at the La Musicale branch. You must show your library card whenever borrowing materials.

Number of items that may be borrowed
20 items for the entire Réseau des bibliothèques genevoises (RBG).

Length of time an item may be borrowed
28 days normally (or by semester, through special dispensation; other varying lengths of time exist according to the type of material borrowed).

Renewing a borrowed item
3 renewals of 28 days if the item has not been put on hold.

Requesting an item
You can request an item before your visit to the library through the online catalogue. You can retrieve your requested item at the Circulation desk (the Prêt à domicile office) at the Bastions main branch or at La Musicale.

Placing an item on hold
You may put an item that has already been borrowed on hold through the online catalogue, or at the Circulation desk. You will be notified when the item becomes available.

Fines for overdue items

CHF 10.00

Items in storage

You may access all materials held in the closed storage areas (over 2.5 million items) through the online catalogue, although in some instances you may have to pursue your search in the library’s card catalogue.
For most items stored at the Bastions main branch, you can submit a request online, identifying yourself by indicating the number on your library card; for items at La Musicale (and for some materials in the Bastions ), you must fill out a request slip in person.

Delivery time
At the Bastions main branch: Items that are shelved in the closed storage areas are normally available 30 minutes after your request has been submitted. They will be held for you for 4 days at the most.
At La Musicale: Items that are shelved in the closed storage areas are available immediately, except for orchestral materials, which are made available on the next business day after you submit your request.
Materials stored offsite: Requested items are made available within 1 to 3 business days.

Open-access materials

Located in the Salle Saussure, the reading room on the ground floor of the Bastions main branch, some 38,000 books are freely available and may be borrowed immediately.
For open access at La Musicale, the music-oriented branch library located on the first floor of the Maison des arts du Grütli, readers can freely browse some 18,000 pieces of sheet music.

Consultation

You can consult all print materials (books, periodicals, sheet music). You only need to show your library card or a valid ID. At the Bastions main branch, at Salle Eugénie Droz, on the first floor; and at La Musicale in the reading room.

Print materials dating from earlier than 1850 are not available for circulation. You may, however, call them up and consult them in the Salle Senebier, on the second floor of the Bastions main branch.

Certain rare or fragile items are also excluded from circulation.

Photocopying

Rero (excluding Geneva): in the Rero union catalogue, click on “Interlibrary loan” or “Online services” and the service you need in the menu, and fill out the form.

CHF 5.- per article and for each 20 pages.

Other libraries in Switzerland (excluding Rero): fill out the ILL form
International: fees are set by the library that owns the document (minimum CHF 12.- per article).

Interlibrary lending

Interlibrary lending service (ILL) searches for items (printed matter, microfilm and microfiche, or digital materials) in Switzerland and abroad that cannot be found in any Genevan library.
ILL helps readers in their catalogue and database searches, and answers their specialized bibliographical questions.

Terms of use
The Interlibrary lending service is open to anyone with a library card from the Réseau des Bibliothèques Genevoises and requires a password.

All requests can be made from the Catalogue Collectif Rero.

You will be notified when the item is available at the Circulation desk.

Rero (excluding Geneva)
CHF 3.- per volume.
In the Rero union catalogue, click on “Interlibrary loan” or “Online services” and the service you need in the menu, and fill out the form.

Other libraries in Switzerland (excluding Rero)
From CHF 3.- to 12.- per volume (e.g., the Swiss-German network IDS).

International interlibrary loans
Fees are set by the lending library (minimum CHF 30.- + shipping fees).
