Historique

Located in Les Délices, Voltaire’s sumptuous residence in Geneva, the Musée Voltaire’s library offers 14 individual work areas for students, researchers, and general readers interested in the Enlightenment.

Bibliothèque du Musée Voltaire

When Voltaire arrived at Les Délices, the residence went as far as the central porch of what is today’s library. We are indebted to the French philosopher and writer for extending the building with the addition of two new wings. It was also in that same room that François Tronchin, the second resident of Les Délices after Voltaire, installed his famous collection of paintings.

Library materials that you wish to consult will be brought to you by the reading room staff. In this branch of the Bibliothèque you will find every edition of Voltaire’s works along with a large number of 18th-century manuscripts, and an extensive collection of works on Enlightenment writers, their reception and continuing relevance today.

If you would like to consult an item from the library’s collections, we would kindly ask you to do the following:

– fill out a reader registration form indicating what you are looking for
– fill out the specific slip if you wish to consult a manuscript
– return the manuscript(s) to the librarian’s desk when you have finished
– leave all other printed matter on the table when you have finished

The room has OPAC, outlets for plugging in your laptop, and WiFi.

For assistance (consulting the catalogues, handling items, requesting reproductions), please see the head librarian or any of the reading room staff.
