Discover the collection’s latest acquisitions

A list of the latest acquisitions is generated each month.

Regular purchases add to the collections, according to the annual budget that is allocated. A list of the latest acquisitions is regularly published.

Table of the intended development of the collections

Acquisition policy is officially laid out in a table that details the different fields of acquisition, weighing the developmental goals of the collections according to the musical genre and support. The overall aim of La Musicale’s acquisitions policy is to

– develop the strong points of its collections
– fill in the gaps of the collections and keep them up to date by proposing new titles for purchase
– respond to the specific demands of the library’s patrons

Scores

Purchases of sheet music cover all of the fields of music that are available in print:

– classical music
– variety, traditional French chanson
– jazz, rock, soul, film music
– traditional music
– learning methods and musical theory

Ephemera and documentation

Collections of music posters and programs of the shows and concerts performed in Geneva have steadily grown thanks to regular additions by show organizers and donations by others.
The library has also been developing a section of reference works on music which are available for consultation in the reading room. These include dictionaries, encyclopedias, catalogues, and guides. La Musicale also subscribes to a number of specialized music periodicals for musicians.

Suggestions for acquisitions

The library gladly accepts acquisition suggestions from the public. If the library does not have, for example, a score that you are looking for, it is possible to propose a purchase by e-mail (bmus(at)ville-ge.ch) or by returning the ad hoc form. You will need to indicate your library card number in order to be informed personally when the item has been purchased.

Undeveloped areas

La Musicale does not purchase books on music or sound recordings (CDs, music DVDs). These can be found either at the Bastions main branch of the Bibliothèque de Genève (books), or in the Department of musicology of the University of Geneva, in the Municipal libraries or in the library of the Conservatoire de musique de Genève.
