Historique

The collection’s strong points are representative of the diversity of La Musicale’s activities, which range from a circulating library of sheet music to collections of old and rare works that are very much part of the city’s cultural heritage.

La Musicale has three strong points

– A circulating library of sheet music
– Music from the 19th to the early 20th century (the wider range of dates is 1780-1914), notably French musical theater and opéra comique
– Ephemera from Geneva’s musical life during this period (programs, posters)

The sheet music circulating library

These collections include all the genres of music as well as learners’ manuals for instruments or voice. New acquisitions are constantly adding to these collections.

Opera music scores

The remarkable collection of documents conserved at the library is connected with the history of the Grand Théâtre and the Bibliothèque.

Along with the scores for operas that are still part of the repertoire, the collection features works by neglected composers, especially the repertoire of French opera and opéra comique, which was very much in fashion in Paris and Geneva in the late 19th century, with names like Massenet, Ambroise Thomas, Audran, and Meyerbeer. These scores take a range of forms, moreover, including orchestral parts, reductions for piano and voice, and librettos.

Ephemera from Geneva’s musical life

A very large number of Genevan concert and show programs have come down to the Bibliothèque thanks to the former theater. These documents tell us about the repertoire that was performed at the time, how many works were programmed for an evening’s entertainment, and how the city’s musical life was organized in the 19th century in time with the seasons. The collection of programs from Victoria Hall is comprehensive from 1894 to the present; that of the Grand Théâtre, from 1879 on.

The library’s historic collections, which are part and parcel of the city’s cultural heritage, boast a series of posters of operas and vaudeville shows whose scores are also conserved in the Bibliothèque; they illustrate the coherence of the materials that have come down to us from the Théâtre.
