Group tours are organized throughout the year by appointment. Please make your request one month in advance online, indicating the number of people attending, the type of visitors, and the kind of tour you would like to take. The Bibliothèque has a number of stairways and narrow corridors so tours must be adapted for persons with impaired mobility and young children.

Visit-and-discover tour of the Bastions main library

“La Bibliothèque de Genève de la cave au grenier” (The Bibliothèque de Genève from top to bottom). Tour takes 60 min.

Following a brief historical overview, you will venture deep inside the institution to explore the réserves, the book storage areas of the library that are normally off limits to anyone but our staff. Then you will go through the reading room where many famous students, including Lenin for example, could once be seen at work.

Tour of the Bastions main library for high school students

“Première approche de la Bibliothèque de Genève” (A first approach to the Bibliothèque de Genève). Tour takes 45 min.

You will visit the open-access shelves, before going on to discover the circulation library system and the route a book takes from when it is requested to the moment it is put in your hands, making its way through the maze of shelves and storage areas in the library. Your tour ends in the reading room, which is usually a hit with students, and a quick overview of bibliographic research tools. Registration to become a member of the library is not included in this visit and must be done separately.

On-Site visits for academics

"The library and its research tools" Time 45min.

Quick tour of the institution followed by a presentation of different bibliographic research tools or a previously requested specific topic.

Tour of the Villa La Grange

The Villa La Grange library is located in the sumptuous residence of that name that stands in Parc de la Grange in Geneva. The villa was bequeathed to the city in 1917 by William Favre.

The Bibliothèque de Genève has care of the library’s 12,000 to 15,000 volumes dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as some twenty incunabula.
